A STUDY OF CLOUD-ASSISTED STRATEGY FOR LARGE SCALE STREAMING VIDEO DISTRIBUTION

Abstract:


As one of the killer Internet applications, current video streaming systems succeed to serve millions of audience with massive video content. Meanwhile, the high and long-lasting bandwidth, together with the huge amount of data
storage, contributes to enormous costs for video delivery in a large scale. Recently, the emergence of cloud computing sheds new lights into this dilemma. A cloud platform offers reliable, elastic and cost-effective resource
provisioning, which has been dramatically changing the way of enabling scalable and dynamic network services.

In this proposal, we will investigate the caching problem during the video popularity churn, especially the popularity decay, in the VoD systems. Then, we will illustrate the server allocation problem for globalized services in the live streaming systems. Through the reviews of the existing studies on both video on demand (VoD) and live streaming systems, we will study the cloud-assisted strategies as the cost-effective and quality-guaranteed solutions to address these issues.


Bio:


Fei Chen received the M.S. degree from the School of Electronics Engineering and Computer Science, Northeastern University in 2009. He is working toward Ph.D degree in the Department of Computing Science at Simon Fraser University. He is doing research in the Multimedia and Wireless Networking Group, under the supervision of Prof. Jiangchuan Liu. His current research interests include P2P VoD streaming and cloud streaming.
